Max Maths, Year 1, Work Book, Patterns with shapes
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Max Maths' workbook designed for Year 1 students, Practice 4 focuses on understanding and creating patterns with shapes. The first exercise encourages children to observe a sequence of shapes and identify the shape that logically follows. They are presented with several patterns labelled from (a) to (e), and they must use their critical thinking to circle the correct shape that continues each pattern. This activity helps to develop the children's ability to recognise and predict sequences, a fundamental skill in early mathematics education.
Continuing with the theme of patterns, the second task asks the children to draw their own pattern using two different shapes provided. This allows them to apply their understanding of patterns and explore their creativity. The third exercise deepens their pattern recognition skills further by asking them to complete given patterns, ensuring they understand the concept of repetition and sequence in patterns. Finally, the fourth task is a hands-on activity where children cut out various shapes and stick them into a box to create their own unique pattern. This kinesthetic approach to learning helps solidify the concept of patterns and allows children to demonstrate their understanding in a tangible and engaging way.
