Short division worksheet
Maths Resource Description
In a mathematics worksheet aimed at enhancing division skills for KS2 students, Activity 1 provides a hands-on approach to division. Pupils are required to have an assortment of four-digit numbers, alongside one-digit numbers, as well as whiteboards and pens for working out their calculations. The exercise begins with digit cards sorted into two piles. Students select one card from each pile and perform division, choosing between the short or long formal written methods to divide the larger number by the smaller one. After completing the division, the children are encouraged to verify each other's work, promoting both accuracy and cooperative learning.
Activity 2 introduces a critical thinking element by providing a mixture of pre-prepared calculations, some of which are correct and others incorrect. Children are tasked with reviewing a given calculation to determine its accuracy. If a calculation is found to be incorrect, they must not only correct the mistake but also provide an explanation for the error, deepening their understanding of division processes. In Activity 3, students are presented with a grid and digit cards ranging from 1 to 9. They are instructed to arrange the digits within the grid to form calculations that meet specific criteria, such as yielding an even or odd result, falling within a certain range, or producing an answer with or without a remainder. This activity aims to meet the objective of dividing numbers up to four digits by a one-digit number using the formal written method of short division, while interpreting remainders in a contextually appropriate manner.
