The Times Table Programme
Maths Resource Description
The Times Table Programme is a structured plan designed to enhance the multiplication and division fact knowledge of Key Stage 2 students, specifically for Years 3 and 4. In Year 3, the programme begins in the autumn term with a focus on teaching the multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4, and 8 times tables. As the year progresses, these facts are reviewed and the students consolidate their understanding, alongside the 2, 5, and 10 times tables that were covered in Key Stage 1. The programme recommends regular practice and provides resources such as 'Nifty Fifty Multiplication Grids' and 'Four in a Row' to support learning. By the end of the summer term, students should have a firm grasp of the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10 times tables.
In Year 4, the programme continues to build on the students' numeracy skills, introducing the multiplication and division facts for the 6, 7, 9, 11, and 12 times tables. The autumn term is dedicated to teaching these new sets of facts, with subsequent terms focused on consolidating all the times tables learned to date. The programme suggests regular assessments to ensure that knowledge from prior years is retained and understood. To aid in this, the same resources from Year 3 are recommended, along with additional materials such as 'Times Table Challenges'. By the end of Year 4, students are expected to revise and be proficient in multiplication and division facts for all times tables, ensuring a solid foundation for their future mathematics education.
