Equivalent fractions using diagrams worksheet
Maths Resource Description
This worksheet provides a series of engaging activities designed to help children understand and recognise equivalent fractions using visual aids. In Activity 1, children are equipped with fraction walls and proper fraction digit cards. Each child selects a card and uses the fraction wall to represent the chosen proper fraction. The task is to identify as many equivalent fractions as possible using the visual representation provided by the fraction wall, which allows students to see the equivalency between different fractions at a glance.
Activity 2 encourages creativity and consolidation of learning, where children are given large sheets of plain paper and coloured marker pens to create a poster. This poster should summarise the steps taken to find equivalent fractions, serving as both a learning tool and a creative exercise. As a variation to this activity, children are invited to write a rap that encapsulates the process of finding equivalent fractions, adding a musical and mnemonic element to the learning experience. In Activity 3, children use long, thin strips of paper to explore fractions further. They are instructed to fold the paper into two equal parts, then continue folding to discover a variety of equivalent fractions. The activity also suggests a variation where the initial fold is changed, for example, into three parts, to explore different sets of equivalent fractions. The objective of these activities is to help children recognise and demonstrate equivalent fractions with small denominators through the use of diagrams and hands-on learning.
