Fractions - Add Mixed Numbers - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the Autumn Term of Year 6, students are presented with a variety of mathematical challenges as part of their 'Fluent in Four' revision activities. On Day 1 of Week 10, they begin with addition exercises that require them to combine large numbers, such as adding 4,906 to 886, and to work with place value by adding quantities like seventy-four tens to seven tens and nine hundreds. These exercises not only test their arithmetic skills but also their understanding of the number system. Additionally, students are tasked with rounding exercises, where they must round the distances of destinations such as Rome, Dublin, and London to the nearest ten and the nearest thousand, sharpening their approximation skills and their grasp of significant figures.
The starter activities also include exercises on adding mixed numbers and finding the difference between fractions. For example, students may be asked to add fractions like 3/5 to 4/15 or to calculate the difference between 4/5 and 18/10. These tasks aim to enhance their proficiency with fractions, an essential part of the Year 6 curriculum. To support their learning, students are encouraged to simplify their answers, such as reducing 13/15 to its simplest form or converting an improper fraction like 29/18 to a mixed number. Through these activities, students develop a deeper understanding of numerical relationships and improve their ability to perform calculations with mixed numbers and fractions.
