Fractions - Order Fractions (More Than One) - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a series of engaging activities designed for Year 5 students during the spring term, the focus is on mastering the concept of ordering and comparing fractions, as well as performing addition with larger numbers. The starter activity, known as 'Fluent in Four', is a quick revision exercise where students are presented with a number line to complete, which helps them visualise and understand the sequence of numbers. Additionally, they are tasked with using bar models to compare mixed numbers, a visual method that aids in grasping the comparative sizes of these numbers. For example, students are asked to determine whether 3/10 is greater than 1 and 2/5, and to find equivalent fractions and mixed numbers.
Mathematical problems are presented to students in a variety of formats to encourage flexible thinking. One such problem asks students to calculate the sum of a multi-digit number and a three-digit number, enhancing their addition skills. Another task involves a riddle where students must decipher the number Esin is thinking of, based on clues given about tens and ones. The lesson also includes exercises that challenge students to write down numbers in sequence, filling in missing fractions to complete the pattern. By engaging with these activities, students deepen their understanding of fractions, mixed numbers, and addition, while also developing their problem-solving abilities.
