Multiplication and Division (2) - Area model (PV counters) - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the context of a Year 5 mathematics lesson taking place in the first week of the Spring term, students are engaged in activities that focus on multiplication, division, and spatial understanding. The lesson includes a 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise that prompts students to perform a series of calculations involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication to fill in the blanks. For example, they are asked to work out problems like multiplying 24 by 55 or subtracting 23 from 55, which encourages quick mental arithmetic and reinforces their understanding of basic operations.
Another key aspect of the lesson is the exploration of coordinates and translation of shapes on a grid. Students are tasked with identifying the coordinates of each vertex of a square before and after it is translated 4 units to the left and 5 units down. This exercise helps them to visualise and understand how shapes can be moved within a coordinate plane. Additionally, they are challenged to draw a shape with an area that is larger than a given first shape but smaller than a second shape, which tests their ability to compare areas and apply their knowledge creatively. The session is structured to reinforce the students' arithmetic skills and to deepen their spatial awareness and understanding of geometry.
