Area - Comparing Area - Starter
Maths Resource Description
Year 4 students are challenged with a variety of mathematical problems in a 'Fluent in Four - Revision' session, designed to solidify their numeracy skills. The exercises include practical arithmetic, such as division problems where students must calculate 441 divided by 7 and 4,272 divided by 8. Real-life applications of maths are also presented, for example, Tia has £8.48 and after giving £5.34 to a friend, students must work out her remaining balance. In another task, the mass of a pizza must be determined from a given scale ranging from 0 to 900 grams. Additionally, the children are asked to explore geometry by considering whether shapes remain the same or change when turned upside down.
The session continues with more complex tasks on the following day. Students are invited to compare fractions using the greater than and less than symbols to complete sentence stems, such as determining whether 13/19 is less than 14/17. They also calculate the total volume of ingredients needed to make Summer Punch for one person, adding together 150 ml of pineapple juice, 170 ml of orange juice, and 350 ml of lemonade. Moreover, they are tasked with summing up the total number of maths homework tasks set over a week, and comparing the areas of different shapes to determine how much larger or smaller one shape is compared to another.
