Place value - Represent numbers to 10,000 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
The 'Fluent in Four' revision starter is a mathematical exercise designed for Year 4 students as part of their Autumn Term learning in Week 2, Day 2. The task challenges students to perform basic arithmetic calculations, such as subtracting two-digit numbers like 83 minus 47, and manipulating place values by subtracting quantities of ones and tens, for example, subtracting 2 tens and 18 ones from 3 ones and 6 tens. These exercises are aimed at reinforcing students' understanding of subtraction and the concept of place value within numbers.
Another part of the lesson involves recognising and representing numbers visually. Students are asked to interpret a pictorial representation of blocks marked with hundreds, tens, and ones, and then write the corresponding numerical value. For instance, a series of blocks with the labels 100, 100, 100, 100, 100, 100, 10, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, and 29 would be translated into a number. Additionally, the students complete a model by writing four number sentences that represent the measurements of a block in centimetres and millimetres. They also convert a combined measurement of 6 cm and 9 mm into just millimetres. These activities are designed to deepen the students' comprehension of place value and the representation of numbers up to 10,000, as well as to enhance their skills in measuring and converting between different units of measurement.
