Multiplication and division - The 8 times table - Starter
Maths Resource Description
For Year 3 students mastering their multiplication and division skills, the "Fluent in Four" revision exercises provide an excellent opportunity to practice and consolidate their understanding. In one of the tasks, students are asked to divide 45 by 5, resulting in an answer of 9. They also tackle a division problem involving a two-digit number made up of 9 tens and 35 ones, which they divide by 5 to find the answer. To apply their division skills in real-world scenarios, the children are presented with a problem involving sharing fifty-six grapes equally among 8 children, calculating that each child would receive 7 grapes. Another practical application is demonstrated with a scenario where 70 sweets are distributed equally into 10 party bags, yielding 7 sweets per bag.
The exercises also include a pictogram related to hair colours, where students use a key representing the number 1 to complete the chart. This visual representation helps students understand data and its presentation. Additionally, the children work on problems related to the 8 times table, such as multiplying 2 by 8 and 3 by 8, and using known facts to find answers to multiplication questions. They are also challenged to use subtraction and addition to solve problems and to understand the concept of mass by recording the weight of objects in kilograms. These varied activities are designed to strengthen the students' arithmetic skills in a fun and engaging manner, laying a solid foundation for their future mathematical learning.
