Length and height - Measure length 2 - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the second week of the summer term, Year 2 students continue their exploration of length and height measurement, focusing on the use of standard units with a ruler. The lesson plan includes differentiated worksheets, teaching slides, and a selection of objects for practical measurement activities. Key vocabulary such as 'measure', 'longer', 'shorter', 'longest', and 'shortest' is introduced, with resources available to support understanding. The children start by recapping their previous experience with non-standard units before progressing to measure lengths using a ruler, where the importance of starting at 0cm is emphasised.
During the session, students engage in pair work to discuss and articulate their measurement process, using full sentences to explain their reasoning. They are taught how to use a ruler correctly by aligning objects with the 0cm mark and reading the scale accurately, even when objects do not end exactly on a centimetre division. Through practical activities, they gain hands-on experience in measuring various objects and encounter real-world problems such as dealing with half-centimetre measurements. The lesson also includes reasoning and problem-solving questions to deepen their understanding. Additionally, the plan outlines common misconceptions, such as incorrectly lining up the ruler, and provides a structured reflection activity to consolidate what they've learned about measuring using standard units.
