Fractions - Problem solving with fractions - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In this Year 2 mathematics session, students delve into problem-solving with fractions and basic arithmetic as part of their Spring Term learning in Week 10, Day 1. The lesson starts with the 'Fluent in Four' revision activity, which is designed to reinforce their understanding of fractions and comparison. Students are asked to fill in the blanks to compare numbers with fractions, such as determining whether 3 is less than, equal to, or greater than 3/4. Other examples include comparing 7 with 7/8 and 10 with 10/2, encouraging the children to think critically about the value of these numerical expressions.
Adding to their numerical skills, students are also tasked with addition problems, such as calculating the sum of 54 with 5 ones and 4 tens, and finding the result of adding 74 to 19. They are prompted to consider time by identifying what 'half past 10' looks like on a clock. The lesson also includes a table completion exercise where students must sort a number into equal groups, enhancing their division and multiplication skills. To develop their geometric knowledge, children complete sentences about shapes, specifying the number of sides and vertices a triangle has. These activities are structured to help students become more confident in their understanding of fractions, arithmetic, and basic geometry.
