Fractions - Assessment
Maths Resource Description
The Year 1 Fractions Assessment is a practical exercise designed to gauge a student's understanding and confidence in dealing with basic fractions. The assessment includes a variety of tasks such as circling half of a given number of objects, like ice lollies and flowers, and colouring in half of each shape presented. Students are also asked to match two halves to form a whole and to identify shapes that are half-shaded. These activities not only test the recognition of halves but also the ability to visually divide objects and shapes into equal parts.
Further challenges involve more complex fractions, where students circle a quarter of a group of items, such as tennis balls and teddies. The assessment requires them to apply their knowledge to solve simple fraction problems, including finding one half of 10 and one quarter of 12. Additionally, they must use reasoning to answer questions like determining the total number of items in a set when only a quarter is shown, or figuring out the original number of crisps Tia had before eating half, based on the clue that she is left with fewer than 4. The assessment concludes with an opportunity for students to self-evaluate their confidence level in working with fractions, ranging from not confident to very confident.
