Place Value within 50 - Represent numbers to 50 - Planning
Maths Resource Description
The Year 1 Spring curriculum introduces students to place value within 50, with a focus on representing numbers up to 50 in various ways. The lesson plan includes a range of resources such as differentiated worksheets, teaching slides, place value charts, ten frames, base-10 blocks, and straws. Students will learn key vocabulary terms including 'group', 'tens', 'ones', 'represent', 'digit', and 'value'. The lesson starts with a small step starter which involves a recap of previous learning, where children will continue to represent numbers using concrete materials, reinforcing their understanding of the grouping of tens and ones in each number. Partner work encourages students to articulate their thought processes using full sentences.
Throughout the lesson, several activities are presented in which children make two-digit numbers up to 50 using base-10 blocks, ensuring correct placement on the place value chart and understanding the difference between the tens number and the number of tens. They also practice reading numbers, completing ten frames, and understanding how to represent zero ones. The lesson progresses to using a variety of resources to show a number and extends to include representations such as part-whole models and stem sentences. Reasoning and problem-solving tasks encourage students to check groups of ten, count in tens and ones, and understand the numbers they are working with. A plenary session with the 'Give me five' reflection activity allows students to consider what they've learned, the skills they've used, and what they found challenging, as well as what helped them during the lesson and what they promise to remember.
