Place value within 10 - Sorting - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the initial stages of the Autumn Term for Year 1, students embark on their mathematical journey by exploring the concept of place value within the number range of 1 to 10. The first day of Week 1 introduces a starter activity called "Fluent in Four - Revision" which aims to consolidate their understanding of basic number operations using tactile learning tools. Each child is provided with 10 counters to engage in hands-on learning experiences. These counters serve as visual aids to help the students perform simple calculations and understand numerical relationships.
The activities are designed to be interactive and encourage the children to physically manipulate the counters to solve problems. For instance, they are asked to display a specific number of counters, such as 5 or 8, to visually represent these quantities. The children also practice basic arithmetic by finding half of 4 and half of 2, and by adding numbers like 4 and 4 together. They are prompted to identify which pictures correspond to the given numbers, determine the number that is one less or one more than a given number, and match numerical values to their written counterparts. These exercises not only reinforce their counting skills but also introduce foundational concepts of addition, subtraction, and number comparison in an engaging and interactive manner.
