Max Maths, Year 6, Learn together, Factors and multiples (2)
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths Year 6 curriculum, students delve into the concept of factors and multiples, learning how to identify common factors across multiple numbers. For instance, when examining the numbers 8, 12, and 20, students list out the factors for each number: 8 has factors of 1, 2, 4, and 8; 12 has factors of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12; and 20 has factors of 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20. By comparing these lists, students can identify the common factors, and in this case, they discover that 4 is the highest common factor shared by all three numbers.
Similarly, when looking at the numbers 18, 30, and 42, students find the factors for each: 18 has factors of 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18; 30 has factors of 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 15, and 30; and 42 has factors of 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, and 42. By identifying the common factors among these numbers, students learn that 6 is the highest common factor. Additionally, the curriculum explores multiples, with an example where a student named Toby lists the first 10 multiples of 3 and 5. Toby then identifies the common multiples between the two sets, which are 15 and 30. Students are challenged to find the next common multiple after 30, further strengthening their understanding of multiples and their ability to apply this knowledge in practical scenarios.
