Max Maths, Year 6, Try it, Numbers to the millions
Maths Resource Description
The "Try it" section in Max Maths for Year 6 offers students a hands-on opportunity to understand and work with numbers reaching into the millions. The first task prompts students to write down the number represented by an abacus, with beads arranged in columns for ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, and millions. The challenge is not only to transcribe the number into digit form but also to express it in words, providing a comprehensive understanding of the number's structure and scale.
The second task involves identifying patterns in sequences of numbers. Students are presented with a series of numbers where each subsequent number is larger than the previous one. They are tasked with figuring out the constant value by which the sequence is increasing. For example, in sequence (a), the numbers increase by 100,000 each time, while in sequence (b), the increase is by 50,000. Students must fill in the blanks to indicate the value of the increase for each sequence. This exercise helps to sharpen their skills in pattern recognition and understanding of place value, as they work with large numbers and observe how they change in regular intervals.
