Lets understand more about the Shang Dynasty - Indus Valley - Year 4
History Resource Description
The Shang Dynasty is a significant chapter in the ancient history of China, with its reign spanning nearly half a millennium from 1600 to 1046 BC. This period predates other well-known ancient civilisations such as the Vikings and Romans by over three millennia. The Shang are celebrated for their contributions to the development of Chinese writing, which played a crucial role in the organisation of their society and government. They were also pioneers in bronze technology and had a formidable military presence that was instrumental in their long-lasting rule.
Historians believe the inception of the Shang Dynasty was marked by the Battle of Mingtiao, where Tang of Shang emerged victorious over King Jie of the Xia Dynasty around 1600 BC. Tang's victory is attributed to his popularity among the people, in stark contrast to the despised King Jie, whose military eventually defected. Throughout the Shang era, there were 30 emperors, with notable long reigns such as those of King Wu Ding and King Tai Wu. The Shang placed great emphasis on religion, with kings often viewed as descendants of the gods and serving as priests with the ability to communicate with the divine.
