Long-term overview - Lake District - Year 3
Geography Resource Description
The Lake District is recognised as one of the UK's most distinctive and remarkable locations, prompting Year 3 students to explore the reasons behind its uniqueness. The curriculum encourages inquiry into the natural processes that lead to lake formation, while also pinpointing the exact location of the Lake District and naming its principal lakes. Students are prompted to investigate the livelihoods of those residing in the Lake District, understanding how the local environment shapes the economic activities of the area. Furthermore, they are tasked with comparing the geographical features and lifestyles of the Lake District with those of Blackburn, providing a contrasting study between two diverse UK regions.
Underpinning this exploration is a strong emphasis on disciplinary knowledge within geography. Students are expected to utilise maps to identify UK counties, articulate the characteristics of different environments, and engage in fieldwork to report on geographical features. They will learn to collect data systematically and create freehand maps, such as charting the route from home to school. The curriculum aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Lake District's unique environment by comparing and contrasting it with another contrasting region. Through these activities, Year 3 students will begin to appreciate the diversity of physical and human features across the UK, fostering a deeper connection with the country's varied landscapes.
