Conjunctions SATs Style Questions

KS2Gems presents a set of five SATs style questions centred around the use of conjunctions, a key component of the English Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling curriculum. These questions are designed to mimic those found in past SATs papers, providing students with an authentic practice experience. The set includes questions that require pupils to complete sentences with appropriate subordinating conjunctions, identify conjunctions in given sentences, and rewrite sentences using coordinating conjunctions with correct punctuation. Each question is followed by an answer slide for immediate feedback.

One example question asks students to complete a sentence with a subordinating conjunction to express causality, such as "George ate a whole pizza because he was hungry." Another question challenges students to identify conjunctions within different contexts, like "when" in the sentence "We wear wellies when we walk across muddy fields." The exercises also explore how conjunctions can change the meaning of a sentence, as illustrated by the difference between "I read a book before I ate my dinner" and "I read a book whilst I ate my dinner," highlighting the temporal relationships conveyed by different conjunctions. These activities are not only suitable as starter tasks to assess knowledge but also serve as effective retrieval practice tools.
