Semi-colons and Colons SATs Style Questions
English Resource Description
KS2Gems has crafted a set of five SATs style questions specifically focusing on the use of semi-colons and colons. These questions are designed to mirror the style found in past SATs papers, providing students with a realistic practice experience. The questions are intended for use as a classroom starter activity, either to assess students' existing knowledge or to encourage retrieval practice, thereby reinforcing their understanding of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Each question presents a sentence that requires the correct placement of a semi-colon or colon. For example, students may be asked to identify where a colon should be inserted in a sentence like "Henry thought carefully about how he should move along the path it seemed very dangerous." The answer slides that follow each question provide the correct punctuation, thus offering immediate feedback. The exercises range from deciding where to place a semi-colon in a sentence such as "Katy wanted to have an ice cream now she might have a pizza later," to choosing the sentence that is punctuated correctly from a set of options. This resource is an excellent tool for teachers to enhance their pupils' punctuation skills in preparation for their SATs.
