Punctuation 2 SATs Style Questions
English Resource Description
KS2Gems has developed a series of SATs style questions, specifically focusing on punctuation, to aid teachers and students in the preparation for the Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling (GPS) assessments. These five questions are designed to reflect the format of questions from past SATs papers, providing valuable practice for students. After each question, answers are provided on a subsequent slide, allowing both teachers and students to assess understanding and knowledge. The questions can be used as a quick starter activity, either to gauge students' current knowledge or as a method of retrieval practice to reinforce learning.
The questions cover various aspects of punctuation. For example, one question asks students to insert a comma into a sentence to improve clarity: "Twice a year Harry visited the mountains" becomes "Twice a year, Harry visited the mountains" upon the addition of the comma. Another question requires the insertion of a pair of brackets to add additional information without disrupting the flow of the sentence: "To be healthy, people should eat less junk food for example burger and chips and take more exercise" is corrected to "To be healthy, people should eat less junk food (for example burger and chips) and take more exercise." The exercises also explore the use of colons, the correct placement of commas to clarify meaning, and the proper use of ellipsis. Through these targeted questions, students can practice and refine their punctuation skills, which are crucial for clear and effective writing.
