Synonyms and Antonyms SATs Style Questions
English Resource Description
KS2Gems has created a set of SATs style questions for Year 6 students to enhance their understanding of synonyms and antonyms, which are key components of the English language. The resource includes five questions that reflect the style and format of past SATs papers, focusing specifically on these aspects of Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling (GPS). The questions are designed to be used as a warm-up activity to evaluate students' knowledge or as a retrieval practice exercise at the beginning of a lesson. After each question, the answers are provided to facilitate immediate feedback and learning.
The first question asks students to identify synonyms within a given passage, prompting them to circle two words that have similar meanings. Similarly, the third question follows the same pattern but with a different passage. The second question challenges students to select a verb that is synonymous with 'present' from a list of four options. In contrast, the fourth and fifth questions require students to think inversely, as they are asked to choose antonyms for the words 'powerful' and 'generous', respectively. These questions are not only a test of vocabulary but also of comprehension, as students must understand the context to make the correct choices.
