Subject, Verb and Object Presentation
English Resource Description
A comprehensive KS2 Grammar presentation, created by Anne Pillar in 2020, is designed to help Year 6 students grasp the essentials of sentence composition. The resource includes a PowerPoint presentation accompanied by a range of activities tailored to the class's needs. Teachers are advised to employ the PowerPoint in sections, each containing whole-class input, group and paired activities, and independent practice. The level of support provided during these activities is left to the discretion of the class teacher. The activities are structured to progressively build students' understanding of the basic components of sentences: the subject, verb, and object.
The presentation lays out the core sentence structure of subject-verb-object, a common pattern in English. It explains that the subject is usually the 'do-er' or 'be-er' of the sentence, typically placed before the verb in statements and after the auxiliary verb in questions. The verb is described as the word that expresses an action, state, or occurrence, detailing what the subject is doing. The object is then introduced as the recipient of the verb's action, generally following the verb in the sentence. To reinforce these concepts, the presentation includes activities where students identify subjects, verbs, and objects in various sentences, with answers provided to enable self-correction and facilitate learning.
