Year 2 - Writing Checklist

In the Spring Term 2 checklist for Year 2, provided by Focus Education, students are expected to hone their writing skills across various genres, each with its specific requirements. Non-chronological reports require students to use appropriate tenses and paragraphs to group related ideas, including subheadings and factual, accurate information. Diary entries should be written in the first person with emotive language and time adverbials to describe events in chronological order. Informal letters feature sender's address, a friendly greeting, and a chatty style, with informal endings such as 'Best Wishes' and appropriate punctuation. Across these genres, students are encouraged to enrich their writing with powerful adjectives, verbs, adverbs, synonyms, similes, metaphors, and alliteration. They are also introduced to the use of noun phrases for detailed descriptions, the progressive form of verbs, exclamation sentences, and the correct use of inverted commas for direct speech.
