Holes Lesson 2: Narrative Devices - Lesson Plan
English Resource Description
The second lesson in the Holes novel study series is designed to deepen students' understanding of narrative devices, specifically focusing on how writers captivate their audience from the beginning of a story. The learning objective for this session is to explore the various techniques authors employ to hook readers effectively. To achieve this, the lesson will incorporate a blend of discussions and practical tasks involving examples from both film and literature.
The lesson kicks off with a starter activity where students engage with a riddle that underscores the importance of a compelling hook in a novel. This sets the stage for the main teaching activity, which spans 40 minutes and includes watching and analyzing three film clips to identify different hooks. Students are then presented with a 'Good Hook' task, followed by a 'Narrative Hooks' activity where they work independently to apply what they've learned. For those who are ready to extend their learning, there's an additional task that involves writing a paragraph explaining the rationale behind the use of hooks at the start of a novel. The lesson rounds off with a plenary session where students share their findings and assess their own and peers' understanding, and homework is assigned to reinforce the lesson's concepts. Differentiation opportunities are embedded throughout to cater to the varying abilities and needs of the students.
