Generosity in Times of Need Lesson Plan
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Resource Description
The lesson plan titled "Generosity in Times of Need" is designed for Primary 5-7 students and aims to explore the concept of generosity, particularly during periods when support is most required. The lesson's objectives are twofold: firstly, to educate students about the role of food banks and other organisations in assisting those facing hardship, and secondly, to encourage pupils to contemplate how they might contribute to aiding individuals in need. The lesson includes a variety of activities, such as discussing the meaning of 'generous' in pairs, watching a video about food banks to understand the services they provide, and sharing personal experiences of helping others.
Throughout the lesson, students are encouraged to actively participate in a range of interactive exercises. They begin by reflecting on their own definitions of generosity, followed by a whole-class introduction to the topic that includes a video on food banks. Students then engage in an activity where they express the frequency of their helpful actions through hand gestures and consider their motivations for helping. The lesson continues with an evaluation of real-life examples of organisational support, rating the impact on a scale from one to five. Finally, the class examines different viewpoints on the lesson's central question and casts their votes after reviewing the arguments for and against the proposition. The lesson plan also highlights additional resources for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and includes challenge tasks to extend learning.
