Lockdown and the internet Lesson Plan
English Resource Description
This lesson plan, tailored for Years 4-6, delves into the critical issue of internet safety, specifically examining whether lockdown has increased the dangers of the online world. The session kicks off with a one-minute feedback segment where pupils review the results and feedback from the previous term's topic. Following this, a starter activity encourages a whole class discussion on various experiences students have had online, ranging from the amusing to the alarming. The purpose of this conversation is to set the stage for the day's topic and to explore why it's currently relevant.
The lesson then moves into a more serious exploration of radicalisation, with the class learning what it means through examples of extreme views. This is followed by an activity where pupils read different scenarios, identify extreme views, and discuss how individuals could be targeted for radicalisation online. Subsequently, students reflect on their own online safety, considering different opinions and deciding whether they agree with them. An extension activity provides an opportunity for pupils to create a toolkit for staying safe online. Additionally, the lesson includes a 'Career Launchpad' component, giving students insight into real-world applications of the topic, and a 'Career Spotlight' where they hear from someone planning a career in Counter Terrorism. The lesson concludes with a voting segment where pupils review arguments and cast their votes on the posed question. Throughout the lesson, keywords such as 'extreme', 'radicalisation', and 'online' are emphasised, and support materials are provided for SEND learners.
