When transitioning to guided reading, the manual suggests utilising All Aboard Phonics decodable books that align with the child's current reading ability. These books contain Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondences (GPCs) on the first page, which are essential for the child to know to read the book effectively. Selecting high-interest books is recommended to engage reluctant readers and boost their confidence. To support a child during reading, prompt them to decode any word they struggle with, encouraging them to reread phrases to improve fluency. While tricky words are not the focus of the lesson plans, a decoding approach is advised for these as well.

Before starting the intervention sessions, it is crucial to gather the correct resources that match the phonics phase(s) the child has completed. The manual provides flashcards, word banks, and sound banks to assist with this. Using the Intervention Tracking Sheet helps in monitoring the child's starting point and progress. After completing five sessions at a stage, the child's readiness to move on is assessed using the Port Assessment. One-on-one interventions are ideal for the best progress, though grouping children at the same stage is also possible.
