English Resource Description
In the first lesson of Week 12, the focus is on the grapheme and its associated phonemes /o/, /oa/, and /u/. The objective of the lesson is to familiarise the children with the different sounds the grapheme can represent. The lesson begins with a 'Quickdash' activity, where children quickly identify phonemes from a variety of grapheme flashcards, including digraphs and trigraphs. The pace increases as the activity progresses, encouraging rapid recognition and vocalisation of the phonemes.
The teaching segment involves writing a large on the board and discussing with the children which phonemes this grapheme could represent. Visual aids, such as the Ox, Ogre, and Umbrella Man, are placed around the to help illustrate the phonemes with example words like 'hot', 'go', and 'mother'. During the practice phase, children engage in a 'Word Sort' exercise, decoding words and sorting them into columns based on the correct phoneme. Words such as 'so', 'go', 'both', and 'honey' are used for this activity. Finally, the lesson moves to the 'Apply' stage, where children match phrases to pictures and engage in mini whiteboard work, writing dictated words and sentences that incorporate the phonemes learned, like 'gallop', 'disobey', and 'month'. This multi-faceted approach ensures that students have ample opportunity to understand and apply their knowledge of the grapheme and its phonemes in various contexts.
