In the third lesson of Week 11, part of the Phonics Phase 5 curriculum, young learners focus on the digraph and the phonemes /igh/ and /ee/. The objective for the day is to explore the different sounds commonly associated with the digraph. The lesson begins with a quickwrite activity, where children are asked to write down graphemes on their whiteboards in response to spoken phonemes, and then display their answers for the class.
The teaching segment of the lesson involves writing the digraph prominently on the board and discussing the phonemes it represents, using visual aids such as Ice Cream and Eagle images to reinforce the concept. Children engage with the digraph through words like 'pie' and 'field', which illustrate its different phonemes. During the practice phase, they participate in a Word Sort exercise, decoding words and categorising them according to the correct phoneme. The lesson then moves on to an interactive Scavenger Hunt, where children search for image flashcards and match them to words on their checklists. Additionally, Mini Whiteboard Work provides an opportunity for children to write dictated words or sentences, further applying their understanding of the digraph. Teaching notes clarify that when is at the end of a word, it typically represents the /igh/ phoneme, and that the transformation of words like 'try' to 'tries' will be covered in a later unit.
