In the fifth lesson of Week 3 during Phonics Phase 5, Unit 1, children are introduced to the new grapheme . The objective of the lesson is to familiarise students with this grapheme, which represents the /oa/ phoneme. The class begins with an engaging activity where children select pictophones, including the Ogre, to identify the /oa/ sound. Once the Ogre is chosen and placed on the board, it serves as a visual aid throughout the lesson.
The lesson continues with a quick revision of tricky words using flashcards, increasing in speed to challenge the children's recall abilities. Next, the teacher highlights that phonemes can have different spellings by writing the familiar on the board, followed by the new grapheme . The class practices pronouncing the phoneme and learns that is rarely used at the end of words, with examples like "toad" and "toe" to demonstrate the point. The practice session involves a 'Real or Not Real' game where children decode words and determine their legitimacy. The application of the lesson is twofold: firstly, through a 'Caption Match' activity where children read phrases and match them to pictures, and secondly, by using mini whiteboards where children write dictated words or sentences, further reinforcing their understanding of the grapheme.
