English Resource Description
In the third week of Phonics Phase 5, Unit 1, the lesson plan for Day 3 introduces the new grapheme . The objective is to familiarise the children with this grapheme and its two phonemic representations. To aid in their learning, two characters, the Unicorn and the Oon, are presented as visual aids and attached to the board. These characters help distinguish the different sounds associated with the grapheme.
The lesson begins with a 'Quickdash' activity where children quickly review a selection of previously learned graphemes and pictophones, shouting out the corresponding phoneme and pictophone name. The teaching segment reinforces that some phonemes can be spelled differently, while some spellings can represent different phonemes. Through examples such as "blew" and "dew," children learn that can represent the /yoo/ phoneme and the long /oo/ phoneme, with the Oon and Unicorn used as visual cues. In the practice phase, children participate in a 'Word Sort' activity, categorising words into two columns under the Oon or Unicorn depending on their phoneme. The application of the lesson involves a 'Yes/No' game using flashcards, where children decode phrases and display their answers, and a mini whiteboard exercise where they write dictated words featuring the grapheme.
