English Resource Description
In Week 1, Day 5 of the Phonics Phase 5, Unit 1 lesson plan, children are introduced to a new grapheme, , which represents the /ee/ phoneme. The objective of the lesson is to familiarise students with this grapheme and its association with the /ee/ sound. The class begins by selecting the Eagle pictophone, which symbolises the /ee/ sound, from a variety of pictophones presented to them. The Eagle is then placed on the board as a visual aid for the children to associate the sound with the grapheme.
The lesson continues with a 'Quickdash Tricky Words' activity, where children quickly revise the tricky words they have already learned, calling them out as they are shown. This is followed by a teaching segment where the instructor reminds the class that the phoneme /ee/ can be spelled in different ways, demonstrating the previously learned and introducing the new grapheme. The practice phase involves a 'True or False' game with phrases containing the grapheme, which the children read and then assess for accuracy. In the application phase, children engage in a 'Caption Match' activity, reading phrases and matching them with corresponding pictures, and a 'Mini Whiteboard Work' session where they write dictated words and sentences that include the grapheme, further reinforcing their understanding of the new grapheme's usage.
