Week 1, lesson 3 Tricky Words (Mr, Mrs, Ms) - Phonics Phase 5, unit 1 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the third lesson of Week 1 during Phonics Phase 5, Unit 1, the objective is to help students learn to read three commonly used but tricky words: Mr, Mrs, and Ms. The lesson begins with a warm-up activity called 'Word Breaker', where the teacher vocalises a word and the children are encouraged to break it down into individual phonemes before saying the whole word together. This activity is repeated with a few words to get the students into the rhythm of phonemic segmentation and blending.
The teaching segment of the lesson introduces the new tricky words, with the teacher providing examples of how these words are used in sentences. An important point is made about these words always starting with a capital letter, highlighting a key aspect of English orthography. During the practice phase, the 'Tricky Word Race' involves using flashcards to reinforce the recognition of these words, turning the exercise into a fun competition among teams. To culminate the lesson, students apply their learning by using mini whiteboards to practice writing the words. Additionally, they are given the task of writing a dictated phrase that includes today's focus words, such as "Mr and Mrs Smith live in Kent," to reinforce their understanding and usage in context.
