Week 0, lesson 3 Review (j,v,w,x,y,z,qu,sh,ch,th,ng) - Phonics Phase 5, unit 1 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
The lesson plan for Week 0, Day 3 of Phonics Phase 5, Unit 1, focuses on reviewing a set of graphemes and their corresponding phonemes. The session starts with a 'Quickdash' activity where children are shown grapheme flashcards for 'j', 'v', 'w', 'x', 'y', 'z', 'qu', 'sh', 'ch', 'th', and 'ng'. The objective is for the children to rapidly identify and vocalise the phoneme associated with each grapheme as the cards are presented at an increasing speed. This activity helps to reinforce their recognition skills and quick recall of sounds.
During the 'Teach' section of the lesson, the teacher places grapheme flashcards and pictophone flashcards (visual representations of the phonemes) on the board in random order. The children learn the names of each pictophone, such as 'the Jellyfish who Made a Wish', and the phoneme it represents, for example, /j/ /j/ /j/. After repeating this a few times, the children are encouraged to identify the corresponding grapheme for each phoneme, with the teacher drawing lines to connect the matching pairs. The 'Practise/Apply' stage involves a game called 'Sound Splat', where grapheme and pictophone flashcards are spread on the floor. The children are instructed to 'splat' the correct card when the teacher calls out a phoneme or asks for the initial sound of a given word, such as 'van'. This interactive activity helps to cement the association between phonemes and graphemes, and also introduces the concept of onset sounds in words.
