Week 0, lesson 2 Review (ck,e,u,r,h,b,f,l) - Phonics Phase 5, unit 1 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
In the second lesson of Week 0 for Phase 5 Phonics, the focus is on reviewing a set of graphemes. The lesson starts with a dynamic activity called Quickdash, where children are shown grapheme flashcards for 'ck', 'e', 'u', 'r', 'h', 'b', 'f', and 'l'. The goal is to have the children shout out the corresponding phoneme as the cards are displayed at an increasingly faster pace, reinforcing their recall and pronunciation of each sound.
The teaching segment introduces pictophone flashcards, which are visual representations of the phonemes, alongside the grapheme flashcards. These are displayed on the board, with graphemes on one side and pictophones on the other, in a random arrangement. The children learn the name of each pictophone, such as "Kangaroos Reading the News" for the phoneme /k/, and then practice matching it to the correct grapheme by drawing lines between them. To apply their knowledge, the children engage in an activity called Sound Pops. In small groups, they are given a set of grapheme and pictophone flashcards. When a phoneme is called out, the child holding the corresponding card lifts it high above their head, allowing them to actively participate and demonstrate their understanding of the grapheme-phoneme correspondence.
