Week 6, Guided Reading "In the Woods" - Phonics Phase 4 - Worksheet
English Resource Description
The "In the Woods" guided reading session is part of the All Aboard Phonics programme, designed for children at Phonics Phase 4. This particular session aims to enhance comprehension skills through a series of questions about the content of the book. Children are asked to identify the tallest trees featured in the book, count the number of different animals presented, and describe the diet of the cuckoo. Additionally, they are encouraged to consider the behaviour needed to observe a fox in its natural habitat. Bonus questions stimulate further engagement, prompting children to reflect on their own experiences in the woods, the importance of conservation, persuasive communication regarding deforestation, and to think about other woodland animals not mentioned in the book.
Accompanying the reading are various activities to consolidate learning. These include using word match flashcards to reinforce vocabulary, completing a worksheet that involves bringing colour to a washed-out image from the book and crafting a descriptive sentence about it. Quiet reading allows for individual processing of the text, and watching a video about the woods or, if possible, visiting a woodland, provides a multi-sensory experience. This helps children to connect the sounds, sights, and sensations of the woods with their reading, deepening their understanding and appreciation of the natural environment.
