In the fourth week of the phonics programme, lesson four is dedicated to teaching children three new tricky words: "here," "says," and "love." The objective is clearly stated at the beginning of the lesson, ensuring that students understand the focus is on learning these specific words, which do not always follow conventional phonetic rules. The lesson begins with a quick revision exercise where children practice writing capital letters corresponding to phonemes called out by the teacher, reinforcing their knowledge of letter sounds and their written forms.

The teaching phase introduces the new tricky words by sound-talking them, which involves breaking the words down into their individual sounds. The children are encouraged to repeat this process several times and are then asked to help use the words in sentences, enhancing their understanding of the words in context. For practice, a 'Tricky Word Race' is conducted using a selection of tricky word cards, including the new words learned. This is followed by a competitive team activity where children race to read the words as quickly as possible. To apply their learning, the 'Write Race' activity involves children writing the word "here" as many times as possible within 60 seconds while sound-talking it, with the process repeated for "says" and "love." This helps to solidify their recognition and writing of these tricky words through repetition and active engagement.
