Week 2, lesson 4 Spelling Tricky Words (was,my,live, you) - Phonics Phase 4 - Lesson Plan
English Resource Description
In the second week's fourth lesson of Phase 4 in the All Aboard Phonics programme, the objective is to help children master the spelling of four tricky words: was, my, live, and you. The lesson begins by setting the objective, where the teacher informs the students that they will be revisiting some challenging words they have encountered before. The aim is to ensure the children can confidently spell these words, which do not always follow the phonetic patterns they have learned.
The lesson kicks off with a 'Quickwrite Capitals' activity, where the teacher calls out a phoneme and the children write the corresponding capital letter on their whiteboards before showing it to the class. This serves as a warm-up to revisit prior knowledge. Moving on to the 'Teach' phase, the teacher writes the word 'was' on the board, ensuring all children can read it, and then uses it in a sentence. The class sound-talks the word together, with the teacher highlighting that, although it sounds like it needs an 'o', it is spelt with an 'a', which they must remember. The process is repeated with the word 'you', with children tracing the letters with their fingers to reinforce learning. During the 'Practise' stage, children use phoneme frames and mini whiteboards to segment the tricky words into their constituent sounds and match them to the correct graphemes, first with guidance and then independently. Finally, the 'Apply' stage involves a fun 'Write Race' where children see how many times they can correctly write each word within a minute, fostering both speed and accuracy in their spelling.
