All Aboard Phonics weekly focus overview - Resource
English Resource Description
The All Aboard Phonics programme provides a structured approach to teaching phonics, spanning from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to Year 1. The programme is divided into distinct phases, each with a specific focus and set of tricky words for children to master. Phase 2, lasting 6 weeks and aimed at Reception-aged children, introduces initial sounds and simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, along with a few common 'tricky words'. By the end of Phase 2, children revise what they've learned and undergo an assessment. Phase 3 extends over 12 weeks, also in Reception, where children encounter more complex sounds like digraphs and further tricky words. This phase includes a revision period and a concluding assessment.
Moving into Phase 4, Reception students spend another 6 weeks consolidating their knowledge of consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant (CVCC) and consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant (CCVC) word structures, alongside revising two-syllable words and tricky words. Phase 5, which spans the entirety of Year 1, introduces new graphemes and focuses on reading and spelling. This phase is broken down into units that cover alternative phonemes, high-frequency words, and various spelling patterns, with periodic assessments to gauge progress. After completing Phase 5, children should be well-prepared for the Phonics Screening Check at the end of Year 1. Those who need additional support can benefit from the All Aboard Phonics Plus intervention, which offers further resources and guidance for educators to assist children in developing their phonics skills.
