Week 10, lesson 5 Writing sentences - Phonics Phase 3 - Lesson plan

In the fifth lesson of Week 10, part of the All Aboard Phonics Phase 3 curriculum, children will focus on enhancing their sentence writing skills. The objective is clear: "Today we will practise writing words in sentences." The lesson begins with a 'Quickdash Tricky Words' activity where children review the tricky words they have learned, identifying them quickly as the teacher flashes the cards at an increasing pace. This helps reinforce their recognition of words that do not always follow regular phonetic patterns.

During the 'Teach' segment, the 'Sentence Sub' exercise provides an interactive way for children to understand sentence structure. The teacher writes a sentence on the board and then swaps out words, prompting the students to determine if the new sentence still makes sense. This is done with several substitutions, such as changing "park" to "shop" or "run" to "hop", and even swapping the subject "I" with "Jill". In the 'Practise' phase, the class engages in 'Write the Picture', where they collectively decipher what's happening in an image and then write the corresponding phrase on their whiteboards, such as "A fork is in a loaf!" The lesson concludes with the 'Apply' phase, where children are challenged to write a dictated sentence, "I can go high on a swing," on their mini whiteboards.
