Week 5, lesson 1 Letter formation - "h" - Phonics Phase 2 - Worksheet
English Resource Description
In the fifth week's first phonics lesson for Phase 2, young learners are introduced to the letter "h" and its formation. The session starts with an objective to acquaint students with the /b/ phoneme, using an engaging visual aid called the Bear with Long Hair card, alongside the grapheme card for the letter "b". This interactive approach helps children connect the sound /b/ to the character and the corresponding written symbol.
The lesson progresses with a revision activity called Quickdash, where children rapidly review flashcards depicting various graphemes and pictophones, shouting out the phonemes and names associated with each. Following this, the teacher narrates a story about the Bear with Long Hair, deliberately emphasising the /b/ sound to reinforce learning. Children are then encouraged to mimic the /b/ sound while playfully acting out bumping into objects. To practise, students learn how to form the grapheme by writing in the air or on a friend's back. The session includes a 'Spot the Fake' game, where children discern between real and nonsense words, further consolidating their understanding. The lesson concludes with writing practice on mini whiteboards and optional extension activities such as using chalk or participating in a letter hunt, offering a diverse and tactile learning experience.
