Athletics - Lesson 6
Physical Education Resource Description
The sixth lesson in the Year 6 Athletics series culminates in a sports day-style competition, combining all the skills the pupils have learned throughout the unit. The learning objectives are clear: to enable pupils to take part in track and field events, to compete effectively, and to demonstrate fair play and respect towards others. The lesson is well-equipped with resources, including bibs, cones, hurdles, jumping mats, javelins, basketballs, batons, and score sheets. The warm-up consists of a team relay where pupils are divided into coloured teams and run laps to earn points for their team. The teacher's notes suggest modifications for different group sizes and provide guidelines for recording points.
The main part of the lesson is the 'SPORTS DAY!' event, where seven activity stations are set up for various athletic challenges: 60m sprints, 50m hurdles, 400m races, standing long jump, standing triple jump, javelin throw, and overhead heave with basketballs. Pupils are split into groups, competing to score points for their teams, with a scoring system in place to reward their performance. Each activity is designed to last 3-4 minutes, after which groups rotate to the next station, ensuring all pupils experience the full range of events. The lesson plan includes key teaching points for each activity and methods for extending or varying the challenges. The session ends with a cool-down where pupils reflect on their learning and enjoyment of the athletics unit, discussing their achievements and any challenges faced.
