Games 3 - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of the Year 2 Games series, students are set to engage in activities that teach them the fundamental concepts of attacking and defending in a game, specifically focusing on the creation and denial of space. The lesson aims to ensure that by the end, pupils will have grasped the roles of attackers and defenders, learned how to create space through dodging, and practiced marking an opponent to restrict their space. Essential vocabulary such as 'attacking', 'defending', 'space', 'marking', 'possession', and 'dodging' are introduced. The equipment required for the lesson includes cones, rugby balls, tag rugby belts or tails, bibs, large balls, tennis balls, and a stopwatch.
The lesson is divided into three main parts: a warm-up, the main activity, and a cool-down. The warm-up consists of a 'Round the World' exercise where pupils work in pairs to touch cones arranged in a circle, improving their speed and agility. The main activity is split into two games: 'Shadows', which teaches marking and dodging by having one pupil try to evade their partner, and 'End to End', a team game that focuses on passing a ball through zones while being marked by opponents. Both games incorporate key teaching points on defending and attacking strategies. The lesson concludes with a 'Speed Bounce' cool-down, where pupils find partners to perform the exercise and share what they've learned about attacking and defending. Throughout the lesson, opportunities for pupil discussions are provided to encourage reflection on the skills practiced.
