Ahtletics Festival - Lesson plan
Physical Education Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of the Year 5 Athletics unit, students are set to participate in an Athletics Festival. The lesson's objectives are multifaceted, aiming to engage students in a variety of athletic disciplines including running, jumping, and throwing. The students are encouraged to perform to the best of their abilities to achieve personal bests while demonstrating a clear understanding of the rules and scoring systems associated with each event. To support the lesson, a range of resources are provided, such as cones, hoops, batons, quoits, balls, and javelins, as well as resource cards that focus on key athletic attributes like speed, coordination, power, and technique.
The success criteria for this lesson are clear and straightforward. Students are expected to work collaboratively in small teams to accumulate points across the different athletic activities. They must apply speed, coordination, and accuracy to their athletic techniques and critically evaluate their own performances after each event. The lesson begins with a 10-minute warm-up called 'Coloured Corners', where students follow commands and run to designated coloured zones, enhancing their listening and concentration skills while performing group stretches. The main activity consists of a 25-minute Athletics Festival where students rotate through different stations, aiming to improve their speed, jumping, and throwing abilities. Finally, the lesson concludes with a 5-minute cool down involving group stretches from head to toe, with each stretch held for 20 seconds to ensure a comprehensive cool down for all participants.
