Medium Term Plan - Athletics - Year 4
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 4 Athletics scheme of work at Key Stage 2 is a comprehensive six-lesson plan aimed at enhancing students' fundamental athletic abilities. Over the course of the program, pupils will build on their basic understanding and skills in running, jumping, and throwing, with a particular focus on running for time or over obstacles, throwing a range of objects for distance, and jumping for distance. The intent is to enable students to accurately replicate athletic challenges, both individually and in competitive mini-events, while also fostering an understanding of performance evaluation, measurement, and recording. The curriculum will encourage children to investigate and maximise their speed, height, distance, and accuracy, working both independently and collaboratively.
The plan is structured to progressively develop key athletic skills and knowledge. Students will learn to consistently replicate skills, describe and assess their own performances, and employ simple tactics and strategies. The program includes running, jumping, throwing, and relay/speed matching. As students progress, they will build upon running across distances, jumping over various obstacles, and using different athletic equipment. The curriculum emphasises accurate replication of techniques, developing physical and mental capacity, improving skills and performance, and decision-making and problem-solving. The lessons are designed to nurture personal development, resilience, sportsmanship, and teamwork, with cross-curricular links to literacy and numeracy. By the end of the program, students will demonstrate improved coordination, speed, and technique, and will have a deeper understanding of the principles governing each athletic event.
