Running at Speed - Lesson Plan
Physical Education Resource Description
In the first lesson of the Athletics unit for Year 2, children are introduced to the basics of running at speed. The lesson objectives are clear: pupils will learn to replicate basic speed running techniques, understand the importance of efficiency in running tasks, and comprehend how exercise impacts the body. To facilitate this, a variety of resources are used including cones, hoops, bean bags, and relay batons, supplemented by instructional cards that cover stretches and acceleration exercises. Literacy is integrated into the lesson through resource cards that help children understand and follow instructions.
The lesson begins with a five-minute warm-up in 'Coloured Corners', where children move around a square space and respond to various commands, ultimately running towards a called-out coloured zone. This activity not only warms up their bodies but also sharpens their listening and concentration skills. Following this, a ten-minute 'Traffic Light Acceleration' exercise teaches the concept of acceleration, with children walking, jogging, and sprinting between cones set at different distances. The main activity consists of fun races, where children start in different positions and complete various tasks, focusing on quick starts and correct running technique. The lesson concludes with a five-minute 'Circle Cool Down', where children perform stretches led by a peer, allowing them to feel their heart rates decrease as they cool down.
