Medium Term Plan - Rugby - Year 11
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 11 Rugby unit for Key Stage 4 spans six lessons, aiming to enhance core skills and apply them in competitive scenarios, including physically demanding drills. The unit also focuses on evaluating performance, providing feedback, and preparing students for both participating in and officiating tournaments. A deeper understanding of the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle is also a key objective. By the end of the unit, all students should be able to engage in small-sided games, respond to pressure with core skills, and exert themselves in competitive play while performing simple officiating roles. Most students will demonstrate effective teamwork, apply core skills against opposition, and referee with some confidence. Some students will exhibit advanced tactical awareness and the ability to adapt techniques, identify performance strengths and weaknesses, and manage game scoring.
Throughout the unit, students will develop decision-making skills, tactical strategies, and a comprehensive understanding of game rules and penalties. They will enhance their proficiency in passing, receiving, tackling, rucking, scrummaging, kicking, and lineouts. The learning sequence will build on fundamental skills in various contexts, involve pressurized game situations for tactical planning, and encourage independent decision-making to refine skills and understand game rules. Key concepts include outwitting opponents, developing physical and mental capacity, replicating core skills in response to changing environments, problem-solving, setting challenges, decision-making, and personal development. Students will also evaluate and improve their performances, developing analytical skills and leadership. The unit includes references to potential careers in the sports industry and encourages the development of sportsmanship and values essential for success.
