Medium Term Plan - Table Tennis - Year 8
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 8 Table Tennis scheme for Key Stage 3, spanning six lessons, is designed to enhance students' mastery of core table tennis skills within competitive play. The programme aims to develop consistency in skill replication, particularly in the execution of shots such as the grip, stance, push, drive, and serve. Students will learn to control the ball's placement, understand the dynamics of spin, and utilise strategic play to outwit opponents. The curriculum also places emphasis on mental and physical development, decision-making, problem-solving, and personal growth, with the intention of fostering resilience, communication, and sportsmanship. The course is structured to progressively build upon attack and defence principles, encouraging students to make informed decisions based on their opponent's position and the game's flow.
Implementation of the course is structured week by week, with each session focusing on specific learning objectives and suggested activities. These range from practising backhand and forehand shots to understanding the effects of topspin and mastering the art of serving. Students are expected to apply these skills in both singles and doubles gameplay, developing strategies to outmanoeuvre their opponents. Differentiation techniques are employed to cater to varying skill levels, and assessment tools are integrated to monitor progress. The course culminates in a class tournament to assess students' ability to apply their skills in a competitive setting. Impact is measured across four areas: replication of core skills, outwitting opponents, understanding of game rules and team play, and development of reflective learners. The programme also highlights potential career paths within the sports industry, broadening students' awareness of opportunities beyond the classroom.
